BIOGRAPHY
Femke Colaris (born 1985 in Maastricht, Netherlands), graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Maastricht and now lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
Femke’s practice centers primarily on mixed media collage and painting. She sources and collects found papers—archival magazines and paper scraps, some over 75 years old. These materials, with their unique stains, textures, and color variations, form the foundation of her work.
She intuitively arranges, shifts, and layers these elements continuously to create compositions that balance experimentation with timelessness. Her creative process is both meditative and dynamic, allowing forms and textures to emerge organically through ongoing adjustment.
Her works explore the relationship between materiality and inner experience. Her collages engage in a dialogue between her intuitive responses and the physical history embedded in the papers she uses. She embraces imperfection and the passage of time as essential to her aesthetic, while her process unfolds with a rhythm that is simultaneously focused and spontaneous. Through her work, she investigates themes of balance, transformation, and the evolving nature of perception.
